The Art of Mental Calculation
Arthur Benjamin will demonstrate and explain the secrets of rapid mental calculation. Dr. Benjamin teaches mathematics at Harvey Mudd College and is one of the world's fastest "lightning calculators". He is the author of several books and has presented his mixture of math and magic to audiences all over the world.
Dr. Arthur Benjamin is the Department Chair of Mathematics at Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, California. In 1989, he received his Ph.D. in Mathematical Sciences from Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Benjamin is the co-author of two books on teaching mathematics and the inventor of the Mathemagics Course, which teaches children and adults the secrets of rapid mental calculation.
He is also a professional magician, and likes to combine these two talents in a dynamic presentatiocalled Mathemagics! Dr. Benjamin has appeared on television demonstrating his lightning calculation talents. He frequently performs at the Magic Castle in Hollywood, California, and has presented his Mathemagics show to schools and organizations all over the world. Dr. Benjamin has also been featured in numerous publications including: The Los Angeles Times, USA Today, Scientific American, Discover Magazine, Omni Magazine, Esquire Magazine, and People Magazine. He has also appeared on many programs including: The Today Show, National Public Radio, and Amazing Discoveries.
FIRST TRICK.
The first trick I’m going to share with you is how to multiply 11 x any 2 digit number.
For a second example:
Take 11 x 45
Add 4 +5 = 9
Enter the 9 between the 4 and 5.
The Answer is 495.
The last example contains a carry over.
Take 11 x 78
Add 7+8 = 15
You can not just put the 15
in between the 7 & 8. Because
you would get 7158 the wrong answer.
You need to enter the “5″ from the 15 in
between the 7 & 8. Then you need to add
the “1″ from the 15 and add it to the 7.
So the final answer is 858.
